Robert Plater : Solo Show

This past week (Nov 29th-Dec 3rd 2010) Robert Plater, an artist in Baltimore, MD, had his first solo show at Towson University. The work featured his recent paintings and drawings. His work incorporates fictional characters usually consisting of inventive creatures with an abstract background. The work depicts characters on their own or in an environment with other characters, creating narratives. The work varies in scale, but the level of skill and care is consistant in each piece. The contrast between his steady line work and abstract mark-making creates an interesting experience for the viewer. Plater's skill is hard to dismiss. In my opinion, this artist will make it!

Interview with Robert Plater

ED: How do you think the show went?

Robert Plater: I think the show went really good. I think I found a nice balance of how to work in different sizes, characters, and colors. The pieces are not that different. They all say the same thing.

ED: What are they saying?

Robert Plater: It is what it is, a piece of art. Everybody was saying that they have my unique style.

ED: What is unique about it?

Robert Plater: I think it's something you don't see much in painting. I kind of mix the styles of other artists, but put my own twist on it. You can see influences like Craola (Greg Simkins), Alex Pardee, comic books, and some traditional work. Before I felt like I was doing random sh*t, but now I think they all compliment eachother.

Installation Shots

These are photos of my newest installation. The loacation was Foster Hall, LSU, Baton Rouge, LA. It was a continuation of my previous installations that investigated the interconnection between thoughts and ideas by means of working in an automatic fashion. The inspiration of the ideas originated from the dynamic of city life, as well as my personal memories and thoughts.
